Natural selection should favor species that maximize their resource consumption–and by the time the consequences of over-exploiting a resource begin to manifest, it should be too late for species to evolve more sustainable relationships with their resources… BUT it’s actually quite rare to find examples of species that have over-exploitative relationships with the resources they depend on. So what prevents species from using things up?
